Bringing Back the Natives

Submitted by Terri Campbell

Registration for the Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour (which takes place on Sunday, May 2) is now open!  Register now at www.BringingBacktheNatives.net to receive your garden guide in the first mailing.  This event is expected to fill; registering at this time will reserve your place on the tour.

A variety of bird- and butterfly-friendly, pesticide-free, water conserving, low maintenance gardens that contain 50% or more native plants will be open on Sunday, May 2, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at various locations throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties. More than 40 garden talks will be scheduled throughout the day.

Visit  www.BringingBackTheNatives.net and browse the "Preview the Gardens" section to read garden descriptions, view garden photos, and more. Preregistration is required.

Native plants will be sold at numerous locations over the course of the week-end in the Tour’s Native Plant Sale Extravaganza; see http://www.bringingbackthenatives.net/native-plant-sale-extravaganza for more information.

Volunteers are needed to spend a morning or afternoon greeting tour participants and answering questions about natives.  Complete the Volunteer section of the registration form if you would like to help out this year. Benefits to volunteers include: invitations to Garden Soirees, in which tour gardens are open to hosts and volunteers; a pre-tour meeting with the owner and private tour of the garden you will be staffing; a guaranteed tour reservation for the half day you are free; a Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour t-shirt, and, perhaps best of all, heartfelt thanks for helping to educate the general public about the many pleasures and benefits of gardening with California native plants.  You can browse the website at http://www.bringingbackthenatives.net/preview-the-2010-gardens to choose the garden you would like to be assigned to. For more information, please e-mail Kathy Kramer at mailto:Kathy@KathyKramerConsulting.net, or call (510) 236-9558 between 9 am and 9 pm.

Minutes of San Francisco Gesneriad Society

January 17, 2010

by David Waugh

The January meeting was called to order by outgoing President  Jon Dixon at 1:26pm.  Also present were David Waugh, Larry Williams, Harriette Poss, Alan LaVergne, Anna Chou, George Iannetta, Kevin Witham, Terri Campbell, Mirmela Arsem, Teh Shan Lee, Tommy Liu.

The first order of business was to install new officers for the year 2010:

President Terri Campbell,   Vice-President Tommy Liu,

Treasurer Gene Sussli, Secretary David Waugh

Board of Directors term ending 2010  Katherine Henwood, Nirmela Arsem

Board of Directors term ending 2011 Anna Chou, Larry Williams

The gavel was handed to incoming President Terri Campbell who presided over the rest of the meeting.

Treasurers report:  as Treasurer Gene Sussli was not present there was no financial report.

Minutes report:  there were no corrections to the minutes of the November meeting so they stand as reported in the December newsletter.

New Business:   The club has paid the entrance fee for the Lunar New Year celebration on February 13.   We will need plants for this educational adventure/plant sale.   Further details will be sent to members.

In the January 2010 issue of Gesneriads is the application and other details for participating in the annual convention taking place in Vancouver BC , Canada June 29-July 3, 2010. One important reminder—everyone crossing the Canadian border will need a passport.   In addition if you are taking plants to the convention you will need a phytosanitary certificate from the US Department of Agriculture.   If you bring plants back from Canada you will need this certificate from the Canadian government.  The Canadian certificate arrangements are being arranged by the Convention.

The program was a very informative slide show about sinningias put together by Mario Peixoto.   This is part of a CD-ROM  titled ‘Convention 2009’ that contains a total of 9 slide shows about gesneriads, only two of which are about the 2009 Convention.    Whoever got this CD-ROM from our January Raffle table got a healthy dose of gesneriad information!

We then did Show and Tell and the Raffle.

The meeting adjourned about 3:55pm
