One Day Plant Sale and Display
Saturday, May 30, 2009
by David Waugh
Our next plant sale and display takes place on May 30 in the Garden Club Room. The San Francisco African Violet Society will also be having a sale in the Recreation Room on the other side of the kitchen. We need lots of plants to sell and also well-groomed blooming plants to put on display. Now is the time to put cuttings down and to plant seeds so they will be rooted and growing in time for the sale.
Hidden Gems of the Flowering Plant World
by David Waugh
The Education Department of the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society (SFBGS) conducts many classes, tours, events during the year about plants. On March 21, 2009, 11:30am-3pm, member Anna Chou, also a SFBGS docent, will explain the indoor and outdoor culture of various members of GESNERIADS: hidden gems of the flowering plant world. This will take place in the Garden Club Room of the San Francisco County Fair Building, the same place where we have our monthly meetings. A $10 donation (materials included, including cuttings) is requested. See attached flyer for more information.
Lunar New Year Flower Mart
by David Waugh
On January 24, 2009 Gene Sussli, Kevin Daly, David Waugh Terri Campbell, Teh Shan Lee and Tommy Liu represented our club and participated in the Lunar New Year Flower Mart. This was in the Gallery of the Fair Building, a large room where there were other vendors including azaleas, bamboo, plant books, epiphyllums, citrus, cymbidiums, Oriental paintings. There was also entertainment including Chinese drums and young dancers doing Oriental dances.
We had two tables of sale plants as well as blooming samples. Our fold-out display of Gesneriads was put at one corner along with our brochures and signup list. Our sale plants included kohleria petrocosmea, streptocapella and columnea as well as some non-gesneriads. We grossed over $190 in sales, gathered some names for our mailing list, and distributed lots of brochures.
Update on Gesneriad Judging School
by Terri Campbell
Gene Sussli, Anna Chou, and Terri Campbell attended the Gesneriad Society Judging School hosted by Barbara Elkin on February 7. Gene and Terri have heard from Ben Paternoster that they passed the test and are now student judges. Anna audited the class, which is extremely useful for anyone who wants to be a gesneriad exhibitor or instructor or lecturer on gesneriads, or who just wants to learn more about our favorite plant family.
Barbara Elkin and her husband were extremely gracious hosts and served us coffee, donuts, and breakfast as well as a delicious lasagna lunch. We enjoyed seeing Barbara's greenhouse, attached to the living room, and her extensive collection of plants such as gesneria 'Lemon Drop' in bloom.
Our chapter will have a meeting program, later this year and prior to our judged show, which will be a practice judging session. Chapter members will bring in a small number of entries for judging by chapter judges. This will be a valuable educational event for all members of our group.
