Remembering Irene Fey

by David Waugh

Irene was a long time member, long time treasurer, and Honorary Member of our Club.  Her son sent a note dated December 20 advising that Irene died September 6, 2008. This picture was taken at a plant sale in October 2004.

In addition to working full time as a bookkeeper/accountant and caring for her loving cats, she had a fascination for plants of the Gesneriad family, studying them as well as growing them.   She also got other people interested in this plant family, and provided strong support to a club formed in 1971 called American Gesneria Society of the East Bay.  They met at various member homes and at the Richmond branch library. They had flower shows and sales, and in 1975 had a judged show and sale. This little club disappeared in 1978.

She was an early member of our club, sometime before 1980.

Even after moving from Richmond to Napa in 1996, creating a much longer drive to San Francisco, she missed very few meetings or shows and sales.  Many of her plants won ribbons when entered into our Judged shows.   She was usually the cashier in the Sales room.

January Program

by Terri Campbell

Our program for January will be the ever-popular "Gesneriad Bingo" game. We will enjoy an educational game with lots of prizes, provided by the club.

We will still have a raffle, so bring your plants and cuttings to share with your fellow club members!

Learning to Judge Gesneriads

by Katherine Henwood

I got a notice form Barbara Elkin of the Delta Chapter about a Gesneriad Judging school they will be Sponsoring on February 7, 2009. Lunch, lecture and test.   To be held at Barbara Elkin's home in Auburn. Cost, $15.00 or audit only for $10.00. See attached document for her address, phone number, and map. I really encourage people to take the class, if for no other reason than to get an insight into the judge's minds!

Lunar New Year Flower Market

by Terri Campbell

We will participate in the Annual Lunar New Year Flower Market on Saturday, January 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  We will have plants to sell and will have gesneriad information for the visitors.  If you would like to help, please get in touch with David Waugh.  We will need some help setting up, taking down, and providing information and handling sales for event.  Last year we sold most of the plants we brought.

If you have anything to donate to the sale, please bring it on the day. You could also bring plant donations to the club meeting and we would arrange for someone to bring it to the sale, if you cannot attend.

This is a good fundraiser and informational event for our group, so please participate in some way if you can.

How to Get Rid of Mildew on Plants

by David Waugh

At the Holiday Party 2008 some of us were discussing how to get rid of mildew.  Dotty Sussli uses this recipe for spraying plants when they develop mildew:

26 oz hot water

˝ tablespoon cooking oil

˝ tablespoon baking soda

Mix the hot water and baking soda together until the baking soda dissolves.   Add the cooking oil and shake.   Let whole mixture cool and then add to hand sprayer ready to use.

When mildew appears on a plant, just shake the hand sprayer and then spray the mildew with the mixture.   It always seems to work.

It might be necessary to respray after a week or so.

Minutes of San Francisco Gesneriad Society

December 21, 2008 Holiday Party

by David Waugh

There was no official meeting at our Holiday Luncheon, paid for by our club. 20 of us enjoyed the usual good food, relaxed interaction between members, and exchange of gifts. Many of us paid our 2009 Membership Dues. We all left, feeling good about all of the above.
