Program: Propagation (bring cuttings!)
February Program
by Terri Campbell
Our program this month will be on propagation. We will discuss propagating gesneriads from rhizomes, tubers, and cuttings. If we all start now, we will have plenty of plants to sell for our May and September sales.
Please plan to bring cuttings, rhizomes, and/or tubers to trade with others for propagation. Give your overgrown plant a haircut or cut the tops off your kohlerias!
2009 Elections
by David Waugh
The election of officers/board for year 2009, as prescribed in our by-laws, did not take place
at the November meeting because the Nominating Committee did not get appointed.
At the January meeting the Nominating Committee was appointed with Alan LaVergne as Chairman. He asked all the 2008 officers if they would serve for another year. They agreed.
At the February 2009 meeting members will be asked to cast their votes for the following; President, Jon Dixon; Vice President, Terri Campbell; Secretary, David Waugh; Treasurer, Gene Sussli; Board of Directors 2 year term expiring 2010 Nirmela Arsem and Katherine Henwood.
Hidden Gems of the Flowering Plant World
by David Waugh
The Education Department of the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society (SFBGS) conducts many classes, tours, events during the year about plants. On March 21, 2009, 11:30am-3pm, member Anna Chou, also a SFBGS docent, will explain the indoor and outdoor culture of various members of GESNERIADS: hidden gems of the flowering plant world. This will take place in the Garden Club Room of the San Francisco County Fair Building, the same place where we have our monthly meetings. A $10 donation (materials included, including cuttings) is requested. See attached flyer for more information.
Gesneriad Judging School
by Terri Campbell
Three members of our chapter attend Barbara Elkin's judging school in Auburn on Feburary 7: Anna Chou, Gene Sussli, and Terri Campbell. It is very helpful for any gesneriad enthusiast to attend a judging school to find out what judges are looking for at shows. Those of us who took the test may qualify to be backup judges for our own chapter, or judge for other clubs. Barbara and her husband Jack were wonderful hosts and served us a delicious lunch, as well as letting us have a look at Barbara's wonderful plant collection. We saw a gesneria "Lemon Drop" in bloom, for instance, and were able to find out for ourselves that it is really fragrant. We also saw more than one nautilocalyx pemphidius in bloom, and many unusual chiritas and saintpaulias.
Minutes of San Francisco Gesneriad Society
January 18, 2009
by David Waugh
The January meeting was called to order by President by Vice-President Terri Campbell at 1:20pm. Also present were David Waugh, Katherine Henwood, Gene Sussli, Larry Williams, Tommy Liu, The-Shan Lee, Alan LaVergne, Anna Chou, Harriette Poss, Kevin Daly, Vera and Ken Parker, Nirmela Arsem
Minutes: The November meeting minutes are in the December newsletter. There was no meeting at the Holiday party in December. There were no corrections to the minutes.
Treasurer’s report: Our financial condition is good. The Holiday Party meal cost us more than expected as we agreed to have dessert, not realizing the cost was extra. We had the funds to cover the extra expense. If you wish a copy of the latest Treasurer’s report please contact Gene Sussli.
President Jon Dixon arrived and took over the meeting agenda.
Announcements: The Lunar New Year Flower Market is Saturday, January 24. All who can do so are invited to participate, selling plants, and telling visitors about gesneriads.
There is a Judging Gesneriads Class on February 9 in Auburn (above Sacramento) at the home of Barbara Elkins. Gene Sussli offered rides to those who want to participate in this class.
David Waugh checked out the cost of renting the Miraloma Park Improvement Club Clubhouse on O’Shaughnessy Blvd between the Tower Market (Molly Stones’) and Glen Park in the event the SF County Fair Building proved too expensive. The cost of rental is about $1400 per day, well above what the SF County Fair Building is now costs.
New Business. It was moved and seconded that we send a $25 award for the 2009 Convention in Washington DC in memory of Irene Fey.
President Jon Dixon appointed Alan LaVergne chairman of the Nominating Committee to prepare a slate of officers for the year 2009. The slate will be in the February Newsletter.
After a short break we did the Show and Tell
We then played Gesneriad Bingo, our program for this meeting.
The raffle brought many new and exciting plants for members.
The meeting adjourned about 3:30pm.
