Program: Tour of Arboretum

July Program

by Terri Campbell

Let's meet at 1:00 p.m. at the door of our usual meeting room--we won't be using the room but it's a good place to meet--please bring your lunch.  We'll have a picnic and have a brief business meeting, mainly to discuss our upcoming show.  Then we'll have our tour of the Arboretum.

September Show and Sale

by Jon Dixon, David Waugh, and Terri Campbell

We discovered recently that the date of our late September 2008 Show and Sale coincided with a HUGE African Violet Convention and the Delta Society Show and Sale in Sacramento.   As result we could not get any judges for our show as they were already scheduled to be in Sacramento.

To remedy this situation we have managed to book the Auditorium at the San Francisco County Fair Building for the weekend of:

SEPTEMBER 6 and 7, 2008   with setup on September 5.

This date coincides with a Show and Sale of the San Francisco African Violet Society in the Garden Club Room and the Recreation Room.   Their show and sale should help attract the public to our show and sale.

Please mark these dates on your calendar and in your Year Book.

At our July 20 meeting we will discuss how to make the huge auditorium as attractive as possible for this event.

Brazilplants Seed List

by Terri Campbell

At our July meeting, I will have the newest list of BrazilPlants seeds.  Once again, please peruse the list and let me know if you would like to grow something on the list.  I will also have some seeds from the previous list for those who requested them.

If you take BrazilPlants seeds, the agreement is that you will grow them and, if all goes well, bring some seedlings to share with the club, for the raffle or passing them around at a meeting, or by bringing them to one of our sales.  Of course you should keep some for yourself.

At our next meeting with a raffle, which will be in August, I will bring seedlings of neomortonia nummularia and sinningia speciosa 'Carangola' to share with anyone who wants them. So far I have had good luck with the BrazilPlants seeds germinating.

Minutes of the June 15, 2008 Meeting

by David Waugh

The June meeting was called to order by  President Jon Dixon at 1:17pm.  Also present were Terri Campbell, Celine Chase,  David Waugh, Bob Hudak, Katherine Henwood, Anna Chou, Gene Sussli,   Kevin Daly,  Nirmela Arsem,  Larry Williams, Vera and Ken Parker, Harriette Poss.

Announcements:  Saturday, June 28, at 9:15 San Francisco African Violet Society will meet at the Senior Center on Fulton/38th Avenue and June Fallow will be giving a lecture on Gesneriads other than Saintspaulia.  See Jon Dixon’s cactus and succulent display today at the Cactus and Succulent Show in the Gallery.

Minutes:  There were no minutes as the May meeting was a Field Trip to Conservatory of Flowers.   See comments about the Field Trip in the June newsletter.

Treasurer’s report:  Our financial condition is good.   We had additional disbursements for Secretary expenses and for purchase of supplies.   We did well at our plant sale on May 31 which counterbalanced our expenses   Our cash balance is less than usual but we are still in good financial condition.    If you wish a copy of the April-May Treasurer’s report please contact Gene Sussli.

September Show and Sale:  Because there is a large African Violet Convention and a Gesneriad Show and Sale by the Delta Club in Sacramento on the same date scheduled for our Show and Sale we have been unable to obtain judges to work at our Show.   It has been decided to try to find room space at an earlier date or later date from September 27,28.    Keep propagating so we have plenty of plants for our sale to be announced.

Comments were made about our Sale and Display on May 31.  The sale went well!  We discussed the possibility of changing the table arrangements for the next display and sale so that we have the display at the head of the room rather than at the back.   We should also try to have more pictures of plants not blooming on the sales table.

The program was a slide show of Achimines.   We are the first to show this new slide show.

After a short break we did the Show and Tell and the Raffle.

The meeting adjourned about 3:50pm
