Holiday Party

by David Waugh

Mark your calendar for the above date when we will have our Holiday Lunch at LakesSide Café, 2529 Ocean Avenue (between Junipero Serra Blvd and 19th Avenue), San Francisco.  The club gives this party for the members when our treasury has enough funds.   It does this year!  If you need instructions on how to get to Lakeside Café call David Waugh at 415 239 4315 or e-mail dgwah@sbcglobal.net.

For those who wish to do so, bring a wrapped small garden-related gift (under $10 if possible) to exchange with others bringing gifts.   This is always a fun part of the party!

Please confirm with Katherine Henwood by phone 650 359 1719 or  e-mail

oakenhead@sbcglobal.net by December 16 that you will be attending the party.

The Golden Gate Express

by Terri Campbell

Enthusiasts of creative landscaping and miniature trains should visit the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers' new holiday exhibit, "The Golden Gate Express."

Miniature railroad hobbyist and Professor Chip Sullivan, who has been teaching landscape architecture at UC Berkeley for many years, designed an innovative exhibit including three trains, live plant landscaping, and models of eleven San Francisco landmarks.  There is even a miniature Conservatory!

Minutes of San Francisco Gesneriad Society

November 16, 2008 Meeting

by David Waugh

The November meeting was called to order by President Jon Dixon at 1:28pm.  Also present were Terri Campbell, David Waugh, Katherine Henwood, Gene Sussli,  Larry Williams, Tommy Liu, The-Shan Lee, Alan LaVergne, Celine Chase, Anna Chou, Harriette Poss, Ron Parsons and guest Mary Gerritsen,

Minutes:  The October meeting minutes are in the November newsletter.  There are two corrections:   Gene Sussli was not at the October meeting.  Regarding the Slide show, Chili is where mitraria and sarmienta are found.  Australia is where fieldia and rhabdothamnus are found

Treasurer’s report:  Our financial condition is good.  If you wish a copy of the latest Treasurer’s report please contact Gene Sussli.

The program was a slide show of Alpine and Cool growing Gesneriads.

There was a short discussion about pesticides.   Marathon seems to be the best and longest lasting systemic treatment.   Bayer 3-in-1 contains marathon.   Safers Soap works, nonsystemic, but has to be applied often as directed on bottle.

A reminder, the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society will have a nursery clearance sale on Saturday, December 6.   You get 2 plants for the price of 1.

Our Holiday Lunch will be on December 21.   Those who wish may bring a $10 garden related gift to exchange with others who bring a gift.

The Gesneriad Society Convention July 2009 will be held in Washington DC.   Full details will be in the First Quarter 2009 Gesneriads.

After a short break we did the Show and Tell

The program was a very informative slide show of flowers and cactus of Mexico taken in 2008  by Ron Parsons and Mary Gerritsen.

The meeting adjourned about 3:50pm
