Program: Slide Show with Ron Parsons

The Prez Sez...

by Katherine Henwood

You will find a report on the Show and Sale elsewhere, but I would like to offer a Gold Star to David Waugh for his work on publicity, all the show computer work and his diligent attention to detail!  Also to Terri Campbell our show chairperson for her organization, to Harriette Poss for the Judges Breakfast, to Kevin Daley for cashiering for both days, to all of you who turned up to set-up and take down, especially Anna Chou and her husband and son, and of course all those who brought plants to show and sell.  It made for a very good event!

This month brings a change in the weather, a definite chill in the air despite the sunshine. Leaves are falling, the begonias are finished and the roses look frazzled.  Yep, fall is in the air!

This month's program will be slide show by our member and favorite photographer, Ron Parsons.  This is you chance to get up close with flowers that you usually see at a distance.  I hope you will be there to see his exquisite slides.

October Program

by Terri Campbell

Ron Parsons will share a new slide program with us on October 21st, on "Wildflowers and Plants of Central Mexico." Also, Anna will be doing a presentation on "Propagation of Saintpaulias." I think that we will have an extended raffle at the meeting, as we are going to give away the leftover plants from our September sale (assuming that Jon will be bringing them to the next meeting).

Show and Sale Report

by Gene Sussli

I just thought you might like to know the final results of this weekend's sale. Well, I think we did quite well, considering that Sunday turned out to be kind of a dud. Here are the details

(after deducting the initial $150 cash balance):

Total Sales Saturday               $522

Full Price Sales Sunday          $259

Half Price Sales Sunday         $110

                                ____

Total Income from Sale          $891

Looking at the above, we sold almost the same amount in the last hour on Sunday ($220) as we did for the rest of the day since opening at 10 a.m. Of course we only got half the proceeds for those sales, but I thought it was busier at the end than in previous years. Of course we also made a few friends on Sunday and hopefully will gain a new member or two from these contacts.

Saturday was the much better day for higher priced items than Sunday. We sold 27- $6 plants on Saturday, but only 7 on Sunday; of the $8 plants it is 16 vs. 4 and finally of the $10 plants it is 4 vs. 1. Almost exactly a 4:1 ratio right across the board. All day Saturday and during the full price period on Sunday we sold only 2 or 3 (out of 8 or 10 originally) of Dave's orchids at a very nominal $4. But as we lowered the price to half, there suddenly an interest in them by the public. However, having just seen what outlandish prices were charged for orchids in the hall of flowers next door, I surreptitiously changed all the $4 tags with new $6 tags. Well we sold them all at half price then. Should have made that $8.

So much for that and see you on the October 21st at the next club meeting. All in all, I am a pretty happy camper. We'll break the $1,000 mark next year.

Terri Campbell adds: Our show awards information has been submitted to Appraisal, including some of Teh-shan's photos, so we may be mentioned in the next issue.
