Program: Gesneriad Society Slide Program on Kohlerias
The Prez Sez...
by Katherine Henwood
November is our election month, and the Nominating Committee has been busy! We do have full slate, thank you all for your commitment to our Society. It can only exist if the membership is interested and active.
We will have an interesting show and discussion on Kohlerias coming up at our next meeting. I hope you will bring plantlets and rhizomes to share. I look forward to seeing you.
Oh yes, I ask you all to make a giant effort to be there between noon and quarter to one so that we can start on time and not have to be rushed later in the afternoon.

Minutes of the October 21, 2007 Meeting
by David Waugh
The October meeting was called to order by President Katherine Henwood at 1:12pm. The following were also present: David Waugh, Jon Dixon, Anna Chou, Gene Sussli, Terri Campbell, Bob Hudak, Ron Parsons and friend Mary Gerritsen, Celine Chase and daughter Barbara.
Minutes: There were no corrections to the minutes for the September meeting which were in the October newsletter.
Treasurer’s report: A report of our financial status for September was passed around by the Treasurer. Our financial condition is good and we made some money at our September sale. If you need a copy of this report please contact Gene Sussli.
New Business: Appointment of a Nominating Committee to nominate new officers and members of the Board for the year 2008. (This did not get done during the meeting but after the meeting David Waugh, Terri Campbell and Anna Chou were appointed to the Nominating Committee. Their nominees will be in the November Newsletter.)
Our meeting dates for 2008 and our show/sale dates were discussed. All meetings will be on the 3rd Sunday of each month except December when we have our Holiday party. Our one day Sale will be on May 31 in the Garden Club Room. The San Francisco African Violet Society will be having a Sale on the same day in the Recreation Room. Our annual Show and Sale will be on September 27/28 with setup on September 26.
We received a thank-you note from Lynn Lombard, one of the Judges for our Show in September remarking that the Judges were treated like royalty at the breakfast and at the Luncheon.
The first program was a talk by Anna Chou about African Violets, the best known of all the gesneriads. Her comprehensive talk, backed up with literature, covered how to make them bloom, how to make new plants, how to sterilize soil, watering, wicking, problems caused by people, and other matters.
We then did Show and Tell.
After a short break (to consume the remains of the cheese cake brought by Celine’s daughter, Barbara) Ron Parsons did a slide show of pictures he has taken of wild flowers, including calochortus. He was accompanied by Mary Gerritsen when many of these pictures were taken. They collaborated on the newly printed book “Calochortus: Mariposa Lilies and their Relatives” put out by Timber Press, available from them at www.timberpress.com
We then did the raffle, and the meeting was adjourned about 3:55pm.
