The Prez Sez...
by Katherine Henwood
June at last! The garden is doing well, I have a couple of columneas in bloom and the nematanthus are coming along. Spent some time setting out petrocosmea leaves, I'm hoping they may be ready for the fall sale. Next on my list is to make cuttings of the remaining hanging plants, they are all old and looking poorly. Oh yes, and repot all the streps. That ought to keep me busy for awhile!
The sale went well. We didn't have as many plants as we have had in the past, but we covered expenses and made a profit. Thanks to all who turned up, especially Anna Chou's husband and son who came early to help set up! Kevin Daly played cashier all day, Anna Chou, Harriette Poss, David Waugh, Terri Campbell and Gene Sussli answered questions and were super sales persons.
You all need to be thinking about propagating for the fall. Not to mention checking out possible plants for show. Remember we have the San Mateo County Fair to think about, too.
This month's field trip is to the conservatory of plants, you should all have received a note from David about that. If you have any questions, you can call him or me. I look forward to seeing you!
This Month’s Program
by David Waugh
This month we are taking a field trip to the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. We will meet at the ticket kiosk in front of the Conservatory at 10:45am and take the tour as a group at 11 a.m.
For those coming by car we were planning to park in the Fair Building parking lot and car-pool to somewhere near the Conservatory. It turns out that the Cactus and Succulent Society will be having a big sale in the Gallery of the Fair Building. There is little chance we will find parking there. Instead you will probably find parking on the street (JFK Boulevard) near the Conservatory, or in the area north of the Conservatory where the dahlia garden is located (from JFK Boulevard, second right turn after Stanyan at the edge of the trees where the grass starts). The alternate is to use the underground parking lot, entrance at 10th Avenue off of Fulton and make the somewhat long walk to the Conservatory.
We previously suggested everyone bring a bag lunch because on previous tours we used to be able to have lunch in the Conservatory kitchen. That is not possible now. If you wish to bring a bag lunch to eat in the park after the tour, do so; but we are not planning to have a group bag lunch.

June Show and Sale News
By Terri Campbell
Our June 2nd Display and Sale was very successful. We had steady foot traffic throughout the day, and the majority of the visitors seemed to be interested in gesneriads (which is not always the case!). We sold the majority of the plants we had available, and we could probably have sold more, especially plants with flowers or those of the same types as the ones on display. Thanks to a number of chapter members, we had a varied and attractive display of blooming gesneriads on display, representing nemanthus, streptocarpus, sinningia, columnea, petrocosmea, and other genera. A number of visitors were seen perusing our educational display. All in all, this was a very successful event.
Minutes of the May 20, 2007 Meeting
by David Waugh
The meeting was called to order by President Katherine Henwood at the home of Jon Dixon, by the pool. The following were also present: David Waugh, Jon Dixon, Kevin Daly, Vera and Ken Parker, Anna Chou, Gene Sussli, Terri Campbell, Teh Shan Lee and Tommy Liu.
Minutes: There were no corrections to the minutes for the April meeting which were in the May newsletter.
Treasurer’s report: our financial status is good. A full report will be passed out at the July meeting.
Continuing Business: Our Plant Sale is June 2. Please bring yourself and your sale plants to the Garden Club Room at 8am to cover tables and arrange plants. The sale starts at 10am and ends at 3pm after which we will pack up any unsold plant and clean off the tables.
The upcoming tour of Conservatory of Flowers on June 16 was discussed. The Club will pay our entrance fees. It was tentatively arranged for those coming by car to meet at the Fair Building parking lot and then shuttle in fewer cars to the Dahlia Garden area just north of the Conservatory. Details of this will be finalized by June 11.
New Business: It was proposed that we make a $25 contribution to the 2007 Convention Awards Committee, chaired by Joanne Martinez. This item was approved by those present.
It was proposed we renew our membership in Brazilplants for one year at $60. This entitles the Club to 6 packets of seeds three times a year. This item was approved by those present.
The program was a tour of Jon Dixon’s yard, house, outdoor benches and greenhouse.
The
yard around the pool is full of all sorts of blooming plants including
gesneriads. The front yard contains a huge bed of bromeliads and when you get
to the front porch there are more gesneriads. To the left of the house
entrance and around the corner there is a deck mostly with succulents. Further
back, six rows of benches, protected by plastic, contains all sorts of
gesneriads and succulents. The rather large greenhouse attached to the
house is on two levels. The bottom level contains plants that like deep
shade. The upper level has a wild array of plants enjoying the tropical air.
The meeting was adjourned about 4pm.
