Program: Prep for the September Show and Sale

The Prez Sez...

by Katherine Henwood

Mid-summer, and the garden has changed.  Dahlias went into the ground late so are not ready to bloom yet except for one that never got out of the ground.  I have a cymbidium in bloom, I don't know whether it is early or late!  In the green house a couple of Saintpaulias are in bloom, some blossoms on columneas.  Diastema comiferum looks good, I'm sorry I didn't enter it for the San Mateo Fair. Ditto for the achimenes.  But how can one know what will be in bloom a month ahead of time!  Very frustrating!

Our program about growing under lights should be interesting, I hope you will all be able to be there.

Good growing to you all!

September Show

by Terri Campbell

For our August meeting, we will have a brief discussion of some last minute projects for our September show. We can discuss last minute sale projects (decapitate your extra kohlerias, etc.) and last minute techniques for sprucing up a show plant.

It's a good month for an extended show and tell, so please bring any interesting plants.

Edited by Lorah Gross

Note: Since the digests contain a lot of extraneous information, I edited it so that you only have to read the important and/or interesting stuff.

Dear Mauro,

Please could you send me one packet each of the following Passifloras:

Malacophylla; Hatschbachii; Picturata; Ambigua x Decaisneana; Ambigua x

Coccinea; Loefgrenii Iporanga.

Please let me know if I have to name some substitutes.

Best Wishes, David Costen

P.S. I thought that you might be interested to know that of the 9 seeds of

P. Edmundoi that you sent me last December - one has germinated after 7

months! I thought I was going to be unlucky because normally your seeds grow

very quickly.

Show and Tell and Raffle Table

by Lorah Gross

Things came up and I was busier than expected this month. Despite the fact that David got the cards to me quite early, I find that I am out of time. Instead of typing up the cards as I usually do, this time I am including them in their original form. Page 1. Page 2. Page 3.

2006 Gesneriad Society Convention

by Jon Dixon and Alan LaVergne; compiled by David Waugh

The program at the July meeting of San Francisco Gesneriad Society was a discussion of the 2006 Gesneriad Society Convention in Rochester, New York.  Jon Dixon, M. J. Tyler, and Alan and Debra LaVergne attended.

The air trip required a change of planes at Chicago for Alan and Debra.  They were pleasantly surprised to be joined at Chicago by other Convention attendees from the northwest coast, namely Vivian Scheans, Peter Shalit and Bill Price.

Both Jon and Alan took cuttings and small plants for friends they knew would be attending the convention, including Mauro Peixoto from Brazil and Alain Chautems, from Switzerland.  They did not enter any plants in the Show.   The generosity of the members who had plants in the Show was almost overwhelming.   At the breakdown of the Show they were giving cuttings from award winning plants to all who wanted them.  So more cuttings were brought back on the return flight.

The plant sale provided many interesting gesneriads and did a gross sale of  about $15,000.  Alan was once again asked to take charge of the plants sales, after the chairman took ill and was unable to attend the convention.

The various lectures were enlightening and this year they have been put on DVD’s.   They will be available for purchase so that anyone can enjoy them on their computer, without a special projector.  Mauro Peixoto presented a comprehensive presentation on the genus Nematanthus.   John R. Clark spoke about the South Pacific species of the very large genus, Cyrtandra.  His doctoral thesis involves the use of computer analysis and field work to discover the pattern of distribution of this genus across the South Pacific Islands, including Hawaii.   Also, there was a fascinating program on color, how we perceive color and how to photograph color.  This was presented by an expert, recently retired from Eastman Kodak.   Olive Ma Robinson presented an early morning program on using gesneriads for arrangements

The benefit plant auction brought high prices, topping out with one for a new streptocarpus hybrid with broad yellow bands that extend from the throat into the petals.   It went for $920.   The bidding was outrageous.   In this case the loser was given a leaf from the winning bidder.  Many other plants in the auction went for bids in excess of $100—all for a good cause

There was a tour of Eastman House, once the home of George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Co.   Eastman House is now a preserved estate, part of which is devoted to a photography museum.

The Best of Show was Chirita Brassicoides entered by Bill Price of Vancouver.  This is a beautiful Chinese chirita with a rosette of broad heart shaped leaves with a natural light green band down the middle of each leaf.   Hopefully, within a few years it will become generally available.

Jon’s choices of best were Sinningia ‘Apricot Bouquet’ and Kohleria ‘Peridot’s  Paradise’

Alan’s choices of best were Chirita Brassicoides and Gasteranthus Atratus

In 2007 the Convention will be in Miami.   In 2008 the convention will be in Denver.

Minutes of San Francisco Gesneriad Society

July 16, 2006 Meeting

By David Waugh, Secretary

The meeting was called to order at 1:18pm by President Katherine Henwood.   The following were also present:  Harriette Poss, David Waugh, Alan LaVergne, Celine Chase, Gene Sussli, Larry Williams, Terri Lynn Campbell, Jon Dixon, Irene and David Fey, Anna Chou and Paula De Bella.

Minutes:  There were no amendments to the minutes of the May meeting printed in the June Newsletter.  Since there was a field trip to Annie’s Annuals in place of a June meeting there are no June minutes

Members commented on the field trip to Annnie’s Annuals in Richmond, California

The grounds of the nursery are very large and had good variety, but not many gesneriads.  All on the field trip bought lots of plants.

Treasurers Report:  We have no outstanding debts, a comfortable balance in the bank, and a cushion reserve in a Certificate of Deposit.  Our June plant sale netted us about $200.  Final results of the June sale will be reported at the August meeting.

Continuing Business:   San Mateo County Fair, August 11-20, entry deadline July 10.   We were number 9 in entries for the 4 x 8 educational tables.   Only 8 tables are available so we cannot enter that category.   Instead we will enter a “window box”.

The judges for our fall show and sale, Falling in Love with Gesneriads, September 23-4 will be finalized in a few days.   The Show Schedule has been approved by the Gesneriad Society and will be sent to members along with entry forms by email.   They  will also be in the August newsletter along with a copy of the flyer being sent to our mailing list.  It was also decided we should make another laminated sign so that both the show room and the sales room will have a sign reading   SAN FRANCISCO GESNERIAD SOCIETY

Members were reminded that the purpose of the show is to show off plants to entice new members to our club.   Entries should provide a variety of plants with various growth habits.

The program was a discussion of the 2006 Gesneriad Society convention.  See article in newsletter.

We then did Show and Tell and the Raffle.

The meeting adjourned before 4pm
