Officer Installation 2005

by Harriette Poss and David Waugh

The Installation of officers at the January meeting was performed by Harriette Poss in an interesting manner.

The new officers are lined up in front of the members in the following order:  the two new Board members, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President, President.  They each receive an unlit candle in a color most meaningful to their elected office. The successive lighting of each candle during the installation signifies a bright beginning of a New Year, and full cooperation working together as a team.

The green candle of the first Board member is lit by the installer.  The installer says:  “I light the first candle to help both Board members off to a fresh start. Your duty is to stand by, ready to fulfill the business of running a successful year.”  The first Board member then lights the green candle of the second Board member..

The white candle of the Secretary is then lit by the second Board member.  The installer says:  “The white candle is symbolic of the white of the pages upon which the Secretary  will write the minutes and represents faithful attendance and constant attention to accuracy.  It also provides illumination of the Secretary’s book.”

The yellow candle of the Treasurer is lit by the Secretary.  The installer says:  “The yellow candle suggests money in various denominations and will illuminate the treasurer’s books so that perfect records may be kept.”

The blue candle of the Vice-President is lit by the Treasurer.  The installer says:  “The blue candle is symbolic of truth, sincerity and devotion to duty at all times.  The illumination will provide guidance in your duties.”

The red candle of the President is lit by the Vice President.  The installer says:  “The red candle illuminates the pathway and guides the footsteps of the President through the coming year.   It symbolizes vitality and aggressive leadership, a token of love and carries with it a promise of cooperation and loyalty.”

The installer says:  “I now declare the officers duly installed and ready to take up their duties.  I wish them a happy and successful term of office.”

Minutes of The American Gesneriad Society of San Francisco

January 16, 2005 Meeting

by David Waugh, Secretary

Katherine Henwood was selling pots and fertilizer at cost prior to the

meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Terri Campbell at 1:15pm.   The

members present were Celine Chase, Terri Campbell, Jon Dixon, Harriette

Poss, Katherine Henwood, Alan LaVergne, Ron Parsons, David Waugh, Dale Loughins, Irene and David Fey, Gene Sussli, Anna Chou, Kevin Daly.

The first item of business was the installation of new officers for the year

2005 by Harriette Poss.  The new officers are:

President                      Katherine Henwood

Vice President              Terri Lynn Campbell

Secretary                      David Waugh

Treasurer                      Irene Fey

Board members            Gene Sussli two year term through ~Q06

Ben Franklin two year term through ~Q06

(these nominations replace expiring terms of Celine Chase and Katherine Henwood)

Alan LaVergne and Harriette Poss remain on the board, their terms expiring December 31, 2005

Katherine Henwood then presided over the meeting.

The minutes for December, as printed in the January newsletter, were approved.

The Treasurer reported our financial condition is still good.   We should have no trouble covering normal expenses for the year 2005.

In view of this the President suggested we investigate purchasing a carousel slide projector for the club instead of having to rely on the use of a member’s projector. It was pointed out that the Kodak Carousel projector is no longer made, and that projectors are becoming digitized, requiring a computer and a very expensive projector. Ron Parsons, who frequents photo shops, will check on new and used projectors similar to the Kodak Carousel and report back to the membership.

After some discussion about the location, it was decided to have a Board meeting on February 20 at 10am in the Garden Club Room, before the regular meeting, provided the room was available.   David Waugh will check on the room availability.

May 22, the fourth Sunday in May, was set aside for a meeting in the Garden Club room because the third Sunday was not available.  May 22 is also requested by someone who wants to rent the whole building.  It was proposed we cancel the May 22 meeting and have a field trip.  It was agreed to have a field trip in May.

Terri Campbell has agreed to be the Show Chair for our Show on August 27-28. The Garden Club Room and the Recreation Room are reserved for the show and sale on August 26 (setup) 27 and 28.   Our normal arrangement is to use the Garden Club Room for plant sales and the Recreation room for the Show. Should we consider reversing the use of the rooms by using the Garden Club room for the Show, and have African Violets join us, using half of the Recreation Room for their sale, with us using the other half for our sale? No decision was made at this time.

As newly elected Vice President, Terri Campbell also became the Program Chair.   She asked for feedback as to what the members would like for programs.   Many suggestions were given, including slide shows, a program on outside gesneriads,  speakers from other clubs across the nation who might be in our area on vacation when one of our meetings is scheduled, tours of Conservatory of Flowers, the greenhouses of Strybing, the carnivorous plant shop in Sebastobol, Annies’ Annuals.

A question was asked:  how many plants are in our judged shows?   The answer was between 85 to 120, depending on what decides to bloom, and the time of year.  To facilitate sales it was suggested that show exhibitors have a number of the same show plant rooted, but not necessarily in bloom, for sale in the sales room.

The program was a picture slide show of gesneriads taken by Ron Parsons at various meetings.  It was a pleasant surprise to see so many of our plants look so good.

There was the usual Show and Tell and the Raffle.

It is traditional for the outgoing President to receive a token of appreciation in the form of a gift.   Terri was presented with a small box, which on opening contained a set of earrings.
