Message from the President

by Terri Campbell

I was sorry to miss our July meeting.  It's been quite a long time since I missed a meeting, and a week-long business trip caused me to do it.  It's great to be back.  I worried a bit about my plants, but none expired while I was away.

A small forest of ziplock plastic bags has sprouted behind my light stands. The bags contain  columnea, nematanthus, aeschynanthus and episcia cuttings which should be well rooted in time for the October sale.  I hope that we'll all have fun that day, sell a lot of plants and dispense some sage advice.  Remember, it's not too late to put down a few more cuttings.

San Francisco PUC Gardeners Calendar

by David Waugh, Secretary

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission produces a Gardeners Calendar each year.   The calendar is part of their Water Pollution Prevention Program. They wanted to include information on the garden clubs that use the San Francisco Fair Building for their meetings and other functions. The following was submitted to them for our club:

American Gesneriad Society of San Francisco promotes fellowship, interest, yearly shows and sales, in plants of the family gesneriaceae (sinningia, streptocarpus, episcia, columnea, aeschynanthus, codonanthe, Saintpaulia among many others).  Meetings: 1-4pm, 3rd Sunday  each month (except December),  Garden Club Room, San Francisco Fair Building.   Contact Katherine Henwood (650) 359 1719 or Jon Dixon (650) 363 0626.  Web site AGSSF.org

Show and Tell and Raffle Table

by Lorah Gross

I seem to have misplaced the show and tell and raffle table forms for the July meeting. If I find them before I produce the September newsletter, I’ll include a supplement in that edition.

Minutes of The American Gesneriad Society of San Francisco

July 18, 2004 Meeting

by David Waugh, Secretary

Vice President Jon Dixon called the meeting to order at 1:05pm.   Members present were David Waugh, Celine Chase, Katherine Henwood, Ben Franklin, Larry Williams, Jon Dixon, Alan LaVergne, Kevin Daly, Ken and Vera Parker, Irene and David Fey.

There were no corrections or changes to the minutes of the June meeting.

The Treasurer handed out a breakdown of the income and expenses so far turned in to her for the Show and Sale on June 26,27.   We netted $50.32 but have possible more expenses and are due some money from African Violet Society.  We collected a good deal of money from the African Violet Society but they have not advised us what they collected on our behalf.   It was moved and seconded that we should hold the African Violet Society money until we hear from them.

Show critique:  We had 61 entries, low compared to previous shows.   There was not as much variety compared to previous shows.  Two shows in the same room seemed to work well.  The floor arrangement and division of the African Violet Club and our show was satisfactory.   The combined sales table worked out well too.  The arrangement of tables for the judges luncheon on the stage was fine.  The Chinese food was good and the price was satisfactory.

Our show judges seemed to be particularly slow, but they were very thorough. The sandwich board signs did not seem to draw the public to our show and sale.   We need to think of better placement of these signs.  In addition the Cactus and Succulent show and sale did not seem to lure crowds to our show.  The scheduling of the show in late June was not the best time.  March/April or July/August might be a better time for a show and sale. Visitor parking was bad both Saturday and Sunday, with no solution.

For some unknown reason the African Violet Society did not total the price tags they collected on our behalf.   As a result they could not tell us how much money they collected on our behalf at the end of the show on Sunday.   This matter is being looked in to so it can be resolved.

We welcomed two guests, Gene and Dotty Sussli, to the meeting.  They had attended our Show and Sale and discussed streptocarpus with Katherine Henwood.  They brought many streptocarpus plants and cuttings.  There was a discussion about the names of some of their plants and how they propagated them.  They later became members of our club.

The prospect of having a display and sale later in the year instead of a meeting was discussed.    It was moved and seconded that we have a display and sale on October 17.   David  Waugh is to see if Saturday, October 16th might be available in place of Sunday.

We then did ‘Show and tell’ and the raffle.

The meeting was adjourned about 3:45pm.
